CHOCOLATE lace flower
Flower of the day: Chocolate lace flower (Daucus Carota). This wonderful cut flower is a wild carrot, often used as a filler but stands out beautifully on its own- and we are loving it!
It is actually a type of Queen Anne’s lace and the blooms come out a deep brown to burgundy to pink with delicate white within. It is extremely similar visually to poison Hemlock… so it’s good to know your facts before planting. This versatile bloomer is an excellent companion crop as well… it creates a cooler, moister microclimate wherever it grows. It attracts a wide variety of pollinators from wasps to butterflies and everything in between. Ours is covered in beautiful moths and ladybugs… such a blessing! The root is edible while young and the flowers can be battered and fried. The seeds were at one time used as contraceptives, though we don’t recommend trying this at home! This beauty really surprises us with its various growth patterns and constant changing appearance every day. Most of the flowers have a tiny, red bloom in the center which is said to be a droplet of blood from Queen Anne’s finger where she pricked herself with a needle while making the lace… but don’t worry when you see it filling up our amazing, farm fresh bouquets… no royal blood in there!
We learn more all the time about this magic we lovingly coax from soil to seed to bloom and wanted to share. Feel free to order a bucket or bouquet and request as much chocolate lace as you can… as you’ve heard… it’s quite interesting! #rainbowspringsflowerfarm #supportyourlocalfarmer #chocolatelaceflower #womeninbusiness #womeninfarming #coloradoflowerfarm #highcountryflowers #handcrafted #wildflowers #growjoy #givejoy #wecanhelpyouwiththat
